Gas or electric, a Samsung dryer that stops heating usually says so with a code: tS, HC, 9C1. In Tumwater and Lacey homes those point first at the vent and the power supply.

Samsung sorts dryer codes by family rather than by part. The temperature family covers tS, tO, tC and tE; the heating family covers HC and hE; voltage codes include 9C1 and 9E; the door family includes dC and dE. Newer displays tend to end codes in C, older ones in E, and some add a leading 1. Many models can also run a vent test that reports its own results, from C80 up to Clg. A family tells you which system tripped. It does not tell you whether the cause is lint, a thermistor, a heater, a relay or the house supply. That takes a meter, and our technicians carry one to every call.
Two Samsung families dominate our dryer calls around Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater: temperature and heating. Both trace back to airflow more often than to parts. In a climate with some 160 wet days a year and fog all through the cool months, exhaust that travels through a crawlspace or garage cools and condenses, and lint sticks to the wet duct. Moss and needles then crowd the outside hood. The dryer runs hot, and tS or HC follows. Voltage codes come next. After a windstorm knocks out PSE service, power can flicker back, and 9C1 may appear. Gas Samsung dryers, common where PSE gas service reaches, add the ignition code HC2.
| Code | What it means | Safe first check | When to call us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung · tS / tO / tE | Problem with dryer temperature or the sensors that measure it. | Clean the lint screen; check the outside hood for lint and debris. | Code returns with a clean screen and a clear, strong vent. |
| Samsung · HC / hE | Heating error: the dryer is running too hot. | Clean the lint screen and exhaust vent before the next load. | HC after vent cleaning, or any scorched smell. |
| Samsung · C80 / C8 | Vent test result: about 80 percent of the vent is clogged. | Clean the lint filter and clear the outside exhaust hood. | Result stays high after cleaning; the hidden duct needs attention. |
| Samsung · C90 / C9 | Vent test result: over 90 percent of the vent is clogged. | Stop drying loads; clean the lint filter and outside hood. | Right away if the hood is clear, since the blockage is inside. |
| Samsung · Clg / Cg | Vent test result: the vent is clogged. | Clear the lint screen and the outside hood flap. | The clog remains after those checks, or the duct looks crushed. |
| Samsung · Ct | Vent test temperature out of range: below 32°F or above 104°F. | Let the dryer sit an hour at room temperature, then retest. | Ct repeats in a heated room; the sensor needs testing. |
| Samsung · 9C1 / 9E | Abnormal voltage is reaching the dryer. | Confirm it has its own circuit and no extension cord; restart. | 9C1 keeps coming back; we meter incoming power and the board. |
| Samsung · FC / FE | Power source frequency reads as invalid. | Restart the cycle once after power has settled. | FC returns, especially on generator power after an outage. |
| Samsung · dC / dE / d0 | Problem with the door, its latch or the door sensors. | Check the latch, remove caught items, and close the door firmly. | Door closes properly and the code still shows. |
| Samsung · bE / 6E | A control panel button reads as stuck or held. | Power off, then press and release each button separately. | A button is damaged or the code comes back. |
| Samsung · AC / AE / Et | Internal components cannot communicate with each other. | Shut the dryer off for sixty seconds, then turn it on. | Code remains after the restart; we check boards and harness. |
| Samsung · 3C | Motor error flagged by the dryer’s control. | Turn the dryer off two to three minutes, then start again. | Drum will not turn, or 3C returns with an empty drum. |
| Samsung · HC2 | Gas ignition error on gas models. | Leave the gas line alone; note whether other gas appliances light. | Always. A gas smell means get outside first, then ring the utility. |
| Samsung · dn | Firmware download in progress; not a fault. | Keep power on; the dryer restarts when the install finishes. | Still showing after twenty-four hours, per Samsung. |
Samsung’s broad reset is to power the dryer off for two to three minutes, turn it back on and restart the cycle; for communication codes, sixty seconds off is enough. Do not cut power while dn is showing, since the dryer is installing software. A reset fits a single code after a flicker or a bumped panel. It is wrong for HC, where the dryer is telling you it ran too hot, and wrong for any vent result of C80 or higher. Clearing those without cleaning the vent just sends the next load into the same heat. Clean first, then restart.
Tell us the code and whether the dryer is gas or electric. Our technician arrives in the texted window, reads the code, checks the vent run from the drum to the outside hood, and then puts a meter on the suspect: thermistor, thermal fuse, heater element, gas valve coils or control. Then comes a plain explanation of the fault and one quote in writing. Accept it and the quote already contains your $99 diagnostic. Decline it, and the visit costs $99 and stops there. We finish with a full heat test and a written warranty, from Bush Prairie to Hawks Prairie.
tS belongs to Samsung’s temperature family, alongside tO, tC and tE: the dryer saw a problem with its temperature or with the sensors reading it. Samsung’s first step is cleaning the lint screen and the vent, because restricted airflow drives temperatures out of range. If the code returns with a clean, strong vent, we measure the thermistors and check their wiring before naming a part.
HC means the dryer is getting too hot, and long exhaust runs are a common reason. Olympia has plenty of older houses, and in some the exhaust duct snakes beneath the floor joists or across a garage, where damp air leaves lint stuck to the duct. Clean the screen and the outside hood first. If HC returns, we test the heater, thermostats and airflow before quoting anything.
Not necessarily. Ct comes from the vent test and means the dryer’s temperature was out of range, below 32°F or above 104°F. A dryer in an unheated Tumwater garage on a cold morning can read too low. Samsung advises letting it sit about an hour at room temperature before testing again. If Ct returns in a warm room, we check the sensor and its wiring.
9C1 means the voltage reaching the dryer looked abnormal. When PSE restores service after a windstorm, the supply can dip or surge briefly, and the control notices. Make sure the dryer has its own circuit and no extension cord, then restart. One 9C1 is usually the end of it. If it keeps returning on calm days, we test the supply and the dryer’s control.
Only the safe part. HC2 is Samsung’s gas ignition error, and we ask homeowners to leave gas lines, valves and fittings alone. Confirm the dryer is plugged in, restart once, and note whether other gas appliances work. At any whiff of gas, get outdoors before you call the utility. Our technician then works through the ignition side with a meter, from igniter to flame sensor to the coils on the gas valve, until the cause shows itself.
Book the $99 diagnostic. We confirm the part, write the price, and the visit is inside it when you approve.
