Soft ice cream, a silent fan and Er FF on the door display: on an LG refrigerator in Olympia or Lacey, that usually means frost has trapped the freezer fan.

LG refrigerators with a door display show faults as Er, or on some models E or r, followed by two characters: Er FF, Er dH, Er CO. Some control panels light a pattern of LEDs instead, and the owner’s manual maps those patterns to codes. The letters name a system: FF is the freezer fan, rF the refrigerator fan, IF the ice maker fan, CF the condenser fan, dH the defrost heater, and a trailing S usually marks a sensor. So a code points at a neighborhood of the machine, never at one guilty part. Er FF can be a seized fan motor, or a healthy fan locked in frost because the defrost heater quit, and only a meter and a close look separate the two.
Olympia’s damp months are hard on freezers. Every door opening lets in moist air, and a door left ajar or a torn gasket turns that moisture into frost around the fan, which is why frost codes such as Er FF and Er IF top our LG list. Newer Hawks Prairie and Tumwater Hill kitchens are full of LG French-door models with in-door ice makers, so ice maker fan and sensor codes follow. On private wells, iron and sediment clog the water filter and slow the flow, and Er gF appears. After fall windstorms, when PSE power comes back unevenly, Er CO is a regular. A warm refrigerator gets same-day priority from our team whenever the schedule allows.
| Code | What it means | Safe first check | When to call us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Er FF | Ice or frost is stopping the freezer fan from turning | Move food, unplug, leave both doors open until the ice melts | If frost returns within weeks, the defrost system needs testing |
| Er rF | Refrigerator fan motor abnormal, often from frost buildup | Same manual defrost; no hair dryer and no chipping at ice | If it returns, we test the fan motor and defrost parts |
| Er IF | Ice maker fan problem, often from frost or ice buildup | Manual defrost, then check that the doors close and seal | Recurring frost means gasket, heater or sensor testing |
| Er CF | Condenser fan fault; the compressor works harder without it | Keep the bottom grille and back area clear of clutter | Call soon; a stalled condenser fan lets the compressor overheat |
| Er dH | Defrost ran over an hour without finishing | Unplug for about two minutes, then restore power | If it returns, we meter the heater, sensor and circuit |
| Er dS | Defrost sensor is shorted or disconnected | Keep doors closed; watch temperatures with a thermometer | Call us; the sensor and its connector need testing |
| Er FS | Freezer temperature sensor is shorted or disconnected | Put a thermometer in the freezer and watch the reading | Call us; we test the sensor before replacing anything |
| Er rS | Refrigerator temperature sensor is shorted or disconnected | Keep a thermometer on the middle shelf; limit door openings | Call us; a bad sensor can freeze or warm the food |
| Er IS | Ice maker sensor fault or disconnection | Keep using the refrigerator; watch whether ice keeps coming | Call when convenient; we test the ice maker sensor |
| Er gF | Flow sensor error or low water pressure | Replace an old filter; confirm the supply valve is open | If pressure is good, we test the flow sensor and valve |
| Er CO | Main board and display are not communicating | Unplug or trip its breaker, wait about five minutes | If it returns, we test the harness and both boards |
| Er 22 | Compressor relay problem | Check whether it is cooling; move food if it’s warming | Call right away; warm units get same-day priority when possible |
| Er rT | Room temperature sensor is shorted or open | Note where the refrigerator sits and how warm it runs | LG lists it as a service code, so call us |
| OF F | Demo mode is on; the display works but cooling is off | With a door open, hold the two buttons your manual names | Only if cooling doesn’t return after leaving demo mode |
For most LG codes the reset is a power cycle: unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker, wait, then restore power. LG suggests about two minutes for Er dH and about five for Er CO. Frost codes need more. For Er FF, Er rF or Er IF, LG calls for a full manual defrost: move the food, lay towels down, unplug, and leave both doors open until every bit of ice melts, which LG says can take a full day. No hair dryer, no chipping at the ice. A reset is the wrong move when the fridge is warming with Er 22 or a sensor code; call us instead.
Our technician confirms the code, then checks what it names: fan motor draw, defrost heater continuity, thermistor readings against a probe thermometer, or water pressure at the inlet valve. You hear, in kitchen language, which component gave out, and its price arrives on paper. Okay it and the $99 sits inside the repair total; pass, and the $99 covers the visit with nothing added. Fans, sensors and inlet valves for popular LG models often ride on the van, so a Cooper Point or Lakes-area kitchen can be cooling again the same day, and the repair leaves with our warranty in writing.
Er FF means frost is stopping the freezer fan from turning. A manual defrost clears it for a while, but if it keeps coming back, something is letting frost build: a door that fails to seal, a split gasket, a defrost heater that burned open, or a defrost sensor giving false readings. In damp Olympia air, a weak gasket shows up fast. We test the defrost circuit and the gasket seal so the fix lasts.
Er gF points to the water flow sensor or low water pressure. On a private well in 98512 or along the Lacey edge, iron and sediment load the refrigerator’s water filter and slow the flow. Swap in a new filter, check that the shutoff feeding the fridge is turned on and the tubing runs without a kink, then unplug for about a minute. If flow stays weak with good house pressure, we test the inlet valve and sensor.
It can. Er CO means the main board and the display have stopped talking. A brief outage, or a surge as the lines come back after a windstorm, is a common trigger. Unplug the refrigerator or trip its breaker, wait about five minutes, then restore power. If Er CO returns, the wiring harness through the door hinge, the display board or the main board needs testing.
Probably not. OF F on an LG refrigerator means demo or display mode, which lights the panel but switches off cooling. It gets set by accident during cleaning more often than you would think. On many models you exit by opening a door and holding two buttons for a few seconds; your owner’s manual names the pair. If cooling doesn’t return after that, call us.
Yes, and we check it with you first. On some LG models, compressor parts are covered for a longer stretch than the rest of the machine. A cooling fault on a newer Lacey or Hawks Prairie model may therefore still sit inside the maker’s coverage. Our technician reads the serial tag, confirms the fault, and tells you where coverage stands before quoting any repair of our own.
